Introduction to a Future Physical Therapist....

My major is Health and Exercise Science with a Pre-Physical Therapy track. I love my major because I get to explore just how fascinating the human body truly is through classes such as anatomy and physiology. When you realize how many moving parts have to work together in the correct sequence for our bodies to function properly it seems like a miracle that anyone survives at all. My motivation to learn about the human body is to be able to help those whose body is in pain and seems to be failing them. I recently found out that I was accepted into the Physical Therapy Program at the University of Central Arkansas so after I graduate this spring from OU, I will be continuing my education in Conway to pursue my doctorate in Physical Therapy this fall.

My dream is to one day to be working as a physical therapist in a location that I love; I hope that I am not too scared to move somewhere new if a good opportunity arises. I have lived in Norman my entire life so moving to Arkansas will be my first taste of growing up and experiencing change on my own without my parents right down the road from me. Ideally I think I would like to live in Colorado because of my love of the mountains, and thankfully with physical therapy I should basically be able to find a job in any area. I am looking forward to just enjoying working hard in graduate school and then seeing where I am in three years when I am finished.

(Work wouldn't be so bad with the mountains in the background like in Boulder)

Now for a slight turn of events another huge part of my life is my dog Jake, he is an angel in the body of a collie. He is the sweetest dog I have ever had, so obviously I will have to bombard you with pictures of him. His favorite thing to do is lounge, preferably with his head on your lap, to go on walks around our lake, and to just be with people.

  1. CONGRATULATIONS on your good news from Arkansas, Savannah: that sounds wonderful! That is a career which could indeed take you anywhere, and you know you will be helping people wherever you go. My cousin works as a physical therapist in the Boulder area, and it's been a great job for her because it was flexible for her career needs when she was raising young children. And your dog looks ADORABLE. Maybe he can appear in some of your stories this semester: Jake could become famous among the Myth-Folklore pets of Spring 2015! :-)

  2. I love that you have such a strong drive and passion to help people in pain and with failing bodies, Savannah! Our major really is the coolest because we get to learn about the human body and personally explore the anatomy, mechanics, and physiology of such complex beings. I can't wait to pursue our dreams together at UCA and experience life outside of Oklahoma! (Of course, we'll have to come back to visit our parents sometimes..) I also absolutely adore every single picture of Jake that I ever see, though my personal favorite that you included is him lounging about in the sun like the sweet angel he is. I still need to meet him sometime and I hope you do include him in one of your projects this semester!

  3. Okay first thing's first, your dog is absolutely precious as I'm sure anyone who reads your post thinks! He looks like the most patient, sweet, and loving dog. :) Collie's seem to always make amazing dogs! Also, congrats on your acceptance into UCA! That's exciting that you're that much closer to your dream, and also that you can share that with Katie! Physical Therapy is definitely a very needed job field, as well as I'm sure you'll be kept on your toes seeing new things everyday and having to come up with new plans of therapy. How exciting. Good luck to you in your future!

  4. Hey Savannah! Just by the brief description you gave about your major makes me extremely interested. I work out whenever I have time, so I think it would be great to share some of the knowledge you have about how the human body actually functions. Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Central Arkansas graduate program! It sounds like you really have a passion for what you do, so I bet you'll be very successful. Collies are easily some of the best dogs out there. I enjoyed the pictures you posted! Good luck for the rest of the year and into graduate school.

  5. I know everyone else has said this, but what a sweet-looking dog! He looks like a Jake. Impressive that he knows how to play the guitar, haha.

It's cool that you're studying physical therapy. When I was little, my mom had a back injury and she often brought me with her to physical therapy sessions. I definitely can appreciate how much it helped her get past her injury.

  6. Hi Savannah! I think it's really cool that you're interested so much in anatomy and physiology. I have a few friends in Anatomy right now and I don't think they like it quite as much as you do, haha. Anyways, lot of respect for your goal of helping other people! Congratulations on being accepted to UCA, always sad to see other students leave but you seem to be broadening your horizons out there, so good luck!

  7. Hi Savannah,
Congratulations on getting accepted into the Physical Therapy Program! You’re humbling love for helping those in pain gives me faith in humanity! I know many people who are studying these things just for the title of being a doctor, nurse, etc., and they don’t seem to care about actually helping anyone get better. Side note, Jake is so adorable! He is so fluffy; I wish I could pet him haha.

Good luck on your future endeavors!

  8. Wow congrats on getting accepted into the program! I know those must be so competitive, so that's awesome! I know what you mean about being afraid to go far from home; I moved from Maryland to here to go to college, but it was one of the best decisions of my life! I really think that getting the experience of living on my own was really good for me. I fully support Colorado as a future living choice too as one of my friends is from there! Also your dog is the cutest!! What a good dog!

  9. Savannah,

I think it's amazing how passionate you are about your major! It really is an amazing job, being a PT. I've had my fair share of injuries and my physical therapist was awesome.

Colorado is beautiful but I'm a huge wimp when it comes to the cold so I don't think I would survive, which is strange because I lived in Boston for 10 years.

Your dog is gorgeous, by the way, and very photogenic!

  10. It is amazing thinking about how the body works! I come at it from the engineering side, but it's amazing to think about how many things have to happen just to move your arm up and down, let a lone run and jump! Also, your dog is adorable! I've had two dogs growing up so I can understand blasting people with pictures whenever you can.

  11. Hi Savannah! I think it's incredible that you have found what you love to do! It's always great to know what you passion is in life and it is an unexplained feeling when you finally find it! Your dogs are so adorable! I have always wanted pets but my mom is terrified of dogs. I think they are my favorites though!

  12. Savannah! It sounds like you've got some exciting plans coming up in the future; physical therapy school sounds like it'll be a great fit for you! I love Colorado; I, too, think I might want to live there one day. But I'm from Utah, so the mountains are home for me. I'm not a big fan of how flat Oklahoma is, so that's something I think I see in my future, too. Your dog is an absolute cutie! I love dogs and yours looks like a big sweetie.

  13. Hey Savannah! I LOVE your dog! He is gorgeous! He looks like such a great dog and wonderful company! Will he be moving to Arkansas with you?
I think it's really awesome that you have found something you enjoy so much and get to pursue it as a career! Congratulations on getting into the Physical Therapy program! I hope you'll love wherever you end up!

  14. Hi Savannah! I think it's awesome that you're pursuing a PT degree! My cousin is actually a PT from KS but he works here in OKC at an Accident Care & Treatment Center for motor vehicle accidents. I work with him, but in a different department as well! PT is definitely a challenge that I thought I'd take on as well, buuuut I'm gearing more towards Occupational Therapy with my Psychology background.
Jake is also very beautiful! I wish my pup wasn't as active, but you gotta love 'em! I too am slightly afraid that moving to a new place could limit me since I've lived in OKC all my life. But after living in Chicago and Wichita for a few months each year, thankfully with the help of my family, I think it's a great challenge to take upon ourself.

  18. Savannah, congrats on getting into that program for the fall. That's really exciting and I'm sure a huge accomplishment. Moving away can be a little scary but I hope that it will be a terrific experience for you... When I studied abroad in 2014, I lived in Italy for a month. Getting on that plane has to be the single most terrifying thing I've ever done but it was also the most incredible experience I've ever had. Looking back, I'm so thankful I was able to do it!! Your dog is also super cute. I have 2 dogs and they keep life fun. Lol. Well, good luck with your plans for the future. i hope you have an incredible experience this Fall!

  19. Hey Savannah!

Anatomy and physiology are really interesting but they're tough classes here B-(. Congrats on getting into that university! That sounds exciting and I hope you enjoy that school. It sounds frightening going off without your parents, but I hope you'll settle in comfortably.

I love border collies!! I have never met one but that's one of my life goals :((. Your pictures are beautiful!

  23. It's so great to get to know you, Savannah! Congratulations on getting into UCA. It's so great that you have such a heart for physical therapy and that you know it's you're calling. I would definitely live in Colorado if I didn't live here either, so that would be such a great choice. Wherever you are, I hope you enjoy it and I am sure you will do great things with physical therapy. I'm excited to read your stories!

  24. Hey Savannah! First things first, my dog's name is Jake too. Plus I am a Psychology Pre-Occupational Therapy major! How weird! I will graduate in December and then hopefully be moving out to be closer to my boyfriend in California! Moving takes adjustments, but it is so fun to learn how you adapt as a person!
